Dana Point Harbor Time Capsule (1966)

On Aug. 29, 1966, a “rock –placing ceremony” was held to mark the official beginning of Dana Point Harbor’s construction. Representatives from dozens of agencies and local organizations stepped forward to contribute items for a time capsule. The capsule was sealed and (two years later) was placed inside a granite boulder adjacent to today’s Puerto Place.
The time capsule was opened a half century later, in 2016. The contents were exhibited to the public at an unveiling ceremony at the harbor, which drew well over 1,000 people. The new permanent home for these materials is the Orange County Archives, where their research value will continue to benefit historians, students, and the general public for many generations to come.

Higher-resolution images of many of the photos from the time capsule are available on the Archives’ Flickr account at https://www.flickr.com/photos/ocarchives/albums/72157674424193026
